The degree of noise, overcrowding and lack of classes make teaching and learning
difficult and frustrating to both teachers and students. It is within this milieu that this
study examined the impact of environment on students academic performance: A
study of the undergraduates students of business management, University of Jos,
Nigeria. For 2015/2016 session only. The major objective of this study is to examine
the effect of environment on students academic performance with a view of profering
solution. The constructivist, environmentalist learning theory and ecological system
theorytheory were used for the study. The methodology adopted for this research
work is through questionnaire and interviews. A total number of 225 questionnaire's
weeds of administered by the researcher. The chi square statistical techniques and
percentage were used in analysing the collard data, and testing of the research
hypotheses. The result signify that environmental variables such as noise and
overcrowding affects students academic performance in the department of business
management, University of Jos. The major finding of this research revealed that the
number of intake keep increasing (exceeding NUC guidelines) without any deliberate
attempt to increase the structure/facilities, and some teachers used examination as a
means of punishment for students. Based on this findings, certain recommendations
are made towards improving students academic performance. Prominent of this
recommendations includes: strict adherence to NUC guidelines of Cass size when
admitting students into the department, examinations should be a means of testing
students understanding of a subject matter. The study concluded that the
performance of students in the department of business management, University of
Jos will greatly be influence, if the entire school environment is greatly improve.
