"Her hands were like spiky little stars, with tiny creases in her fingers and real little fingernails, which I explored with my teeth and tongue."

A little girl is given a baby doll and ‘adopted’ by a grandmotherly woman in her town. When the girl’s family moves away, Nana Frank keeps in touch, and years later invites Greta to come and stay. But over time, Nana Frank’s personal circumstances change and Greta is forced to confront questions of privilege, complacency, class and rejection.
