A Sliver of Light
1 part / 5 pages
,
updated Dec 28, 2013

This story explores the lives of several participants and organisers of a game of Russian Roulette in a seedy urban basement. Exploring the themes of fate and fatalism, "A Sliver of Light" delves into the emotional and physical demons that haunt some people - causing them to become so disenfranchised with life that this is their course of action.   These people live on the edge of society - invisible to the majority of people. Stephen Sharp battles his inner demons every day. Whilst Carly Wilson's problems reveal themselves to be a lot more visceral. Judith Scruth is an elderly lady who longs for the love of her deceased husband, whilst Franklin Bletch (tricked into the game) rues a lifetime of sin that has resulted in this reckoning.   The organisers of this game are a pair of world weary soldiers of fortune - one a jaded ex-SAS soldier who had recently discovered what it was to love, the other a psychotic torturer who owes his life and his fate to his friend.   The story tells the tale of love lost and gained, redemption and reconciliation. There can be only one winner...but in the end of this game, does anybody really ever win?

I popped out and scared my sister " ur not supposed to pop out ur no good at this" "neither are u!" I yelled and ran away from then she wasn't seen again. Days later juliet was declared missing I knew I had driving her away. Now it is years and shes not thought of the only thought about her is dead. I belive shes alive. They say to let it go. But I know shes alive. Until the day they found a bodie and declared it as Juliet Roberts. I didn't believe it. At all...... I was hurt and didn't belive it was her bodie. My phone bussed as a unknown number I looked at the text (hi I see they found her my little decoy to stop all the fuss about me stay alert the game isn't over its just begun but instead of being found and playing again its hide or die ur choise and remember ur no good at this) seeing the words on the screen I trembled. It couldnt be her. For once I belibed she was dead but I knew it had to be her.... I thought of prank calls in text form and assumes the new bodie finding gave them an idea I called Alex ( hey bestie how about a game of twister at ur place) (sure) I enjoyed the time I had standing " left foot green" I tried but ended up tripping us both we giggled " ur no good at this" she said laughing. I stopped laughing then my phone buzzed ( ur .Not so smart are u little sis just cause u come here didn't mean u can escape) photos started popping up on my screen of the bodie that was found and the memorial servic.

updated Nov 23, 2013

GENRE: Contemporary, Crime, Fiction, Suspense24,850 words; Complete Novella - Ninth draft, but still not yet finely polished . . . More work to come but still readable, with all elements in place. Both lines of the first-person narrator’s Appalachian Mountain families’ are moonshiners going back generations, and as he tells it, “My uncles all were outlaws, every last one of them, and daddy was, too.  They weren’t lazy.  They knew what hard work was, and were eager to avoid it . . .”  The narrator’s daddy and his mother’s daddy were the biggest obstacles to circumvent in any situation that developed, and surrounding those two, one could always count on situations developing.  They made life difficult for people inside and out of the family, but they served the big fish that swim near the surface, the power elite of Mesach County.  Even after the end of Prohibition, their special services remained valuable.  As was clear that he would from the beginning, daddy finally took things too far.  Something had to give, and the end began at Oblivion Bridge . . .
